Lauren Jane Powell was born in Springfield, Massachusetts on June 9, 1984. She is the daughter of Jim and Barb Powell. Her father played basketball at the University of South Carolina. He is now a coach for the Indiana Pacers. Her sister Kara plays basketball for University of Richmond. She trained at Tim Daggett Gold Medal Gymnastics during her club career. She graduated from Agawam High School in 2002.
As a level ten gymnast, Lauren won the Massachusetts State Titles in 1998, 1999, and 2000. She won the Regional vault crown in 2001. She won bars at JO Nationals in 2001. She finished second on bars at Regionals in 2002. Lauren also qualified to elite in 2002. She red shirted her first season with a dislocated elbow. In 2004, she competed on every event except for vault. She competed on bars seven times, beam eight times and nine times on floor.
During her junior season, Lauren competed in the all-around five times. She competed on the bars 11 times, beam 10 times, and vault and floor six times, Lauren competed in every meet on vault, bars and beam in 2006. She led the team on vault at the NCAA Nationals. In 2007, she competed on all four events. She placed third all-around against Stanford. She won vault against UCLA. She could not finish her season because she tore her ACL while practicing beam in February.
