Carly Preston was born on December 7, 1998. She trained at Infinity Gymnastics Academy through the 2009 season. She then moved to Gedderts' Twistars USA.

In 2007, Carly competed level five. She won beam at the National Judges Cup. At the Buckeye Classic, she placed first on bars and second all-around. She competed level six in the fall. She also made the National TOPs Team in the fall. Carly competed level seven in 2008. She finished second all-around and first on floor at the State Championships. She made the National TOPs "B" Team in the fall. In 2009, Carly competed level eight. She finished first on bars at the Alamo Classic. She also won uneven bars at the State Championships. Carly competed at Regionals. She continued competing level eight in 2010. She finished first on vault and the all-around at the Twistars Invitational. She placed first on bars and beam at the Battle of Champions. At the For Love or Money meet, she placed third all-around and first on bars. Carly also won bars at the Wolverine Classic and Byers Invitational. She placed first on bars at the State Championships. At Regionals, Carly placed second all-around.

Carly began competing level nine in 2011. She finished first on bars at the Twistars Invitational. She placed second on beam at the Tamapa Bay Turners Invitational. At the IGI Chicago Style, she placed second on bars and beam. Carly finished second on bars at the WOGA Classic.
