Shelby Prunty was born on September 1, 1991. She trained at Gymkhana through the 2004 season. She then moved to Illinois Gymnastics Institute She graduated from high school in 2009.

In 2002, Shelby competed level nine. She finished eighth all-around at Easterns. She placed third on bars and eighth on floor. In 2003, she competed at Regionals. In 2004, Shelby finished 12th all-around at Regionals. She placed in the top ten on floor at Easterns. Shelby moved up to level ten in 2005. She finished fourth on bars at the State Championships. She placed 12th all-around at Regionals. In 2006, Shelby won bars and finished second all-around at Regionals. She finished sixth on bars and tenth all-around at JO Nationals.

Shelby won beam at Regionals in 2007. She finished 13th all-around at JO Nationals. In 2008, Shelby finished second on bars at the Bravo Classic. She placed third on bars and beam at the Gasparilla Classic. She won floor at the Flip'r Invitational. Shelby finished ninth all-around at Regionals. In 2009, Shelby won beam and the all-around at the Battle of the Champions. She finished third all-around at the WOGA Classic. At the Flip'r Invitational, she won beam. Shelby won bars at the State Championships. At Regionals, she placed fourth on beam.

As a freshman at LSU in 2010, Shelby competed on bars and beam throughout the season. She competed on vault against TWU. She recorded her season high score on beam at the NCAA Championships.
