Vanessa Marie Rocca was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on March 26, 1987. She is the daughter of Ambrose and Theresa Rocca. She has two older brothers, Erin and Brandon. Vanessa graduated from North Allegheny High School in 2005. She competed for X-Cel Gymnastics during her club career.

As a level ten gymnast, Vanessa competed at the 2002 Level 10 State Championships. She won floor. In 2004, she finished third all-around and first on beam. She competed at Regionals in 2005. Vanessa also competed for her high school. She won the Division Championships in 2002 and 2004. During her freshman season at ASU, Vanessa competed on floor once. She also did a beam exhibition. She retired after one season.
