Alexis Russell was born on September 8, 1988. She is the daughter of Barbara and Anthony. She has two brothers, Anthony and Tyler. She competed for Classic Gymnastics in 2002. She moved to Great American Gymnastics Express in 2003. She had an injury which kept her out for the rest of the season. In 2005, she competed for her high school. She returned to club gymnastics at Perpetual Motion in 2006.

Alexis, in 2001, won the level 9 vault, bars, beam and all-around state titles. In 2002, she competed for Classic Gymnastics. She won the level 10 state all-around title and regional beam title. At the JO National Championships Alexis finished 12th all-around. In 2003, Alexis trained at GAGE. She competed at the National Elite Podium Meet before an injury took her out of the season. In 2005, Alexis competed in high school gymnastics. In 2006, she began training at Perpetual Motion in Woodbury. At States, she won the all-around, floor and uneven bars titles. She won floor at Regionals. She did very well at JO Nationals.

As a freshman, she competed on vault, bars and floor in all thirteen meets. She did beam and the all-around at ten meets. She won vault against Iowa and Utah State. She won bars at the Best of Minnesota meet. In 2008, Alexis missed four meets because of a knee injury. She was limited to the all-around in four meets. She competed on bars eight times, beam four meets, and floor nine meets. During her junior season, she competed in the all-around eleven times. She earned first-team All-Big Ten honors after placing fourth in the all-around at the Big Ten Championships. She won four event titles on bars throughout the season. She also won three floor titles and three all-around titles.
