Samantha Ariel Miller, the fourth of five children to Bob and Theresa, was born on May 25, 1990. She was born in Dallas, Texas. She began gymnastics in 1992 as a toddler with her daycare center. Three years later she began gymnastics at the Dallas Gymnastics Center. Samantha started competing at the age of seven as a level four.

Samantha made the TOPS National Team in 1998. In 1999, she won beam at the Level Seven State Championships. She made the TOPS National Team in 1999, 2000 and 2001. At the age of 12, she became a child national elite. This was in 2002. She made it to junior international elite in 2003. Samantha continued to compete as a junior international elite in 2004. She placed sixth all-around at the WOGA Classic. At the American Classic, she finished tenth all-around. This qualified her for her first US National Championships. Shortly before Nationals, she competed at the US Classic. At Nationals, Samantha barely missed making the national team by one spot. After a year of injuries, she qualified to her second national championships in 2005. Unfortunately, Sam once again missed the national team by a spot.

In 2006, she was forced to make a big decision. Her long time coach Larry McDonough began coaching at Kurt Thomas Gymnastics. Samantha continued to train with him, leaving her long time gym. In December, Sam and her teammates began training at Metroplex with Larry. Her 2006 season was filled with injuries.
