Sarah Schmidt was born on April 4, 1988. She is the daughter of Roger and Kim Schmidt. She graduated from Arrowhead High School. She trained at Midwest Twisters Gymnastics during her club career. She began gymnastics at the age of four.

In 2003, she competed as a level ten. She was the alternate for JO Nationals. She finished in the same spot in 2004. Sarah placed second on floor and sixth all-around at Regionals in 2005. She competed at her first and only JO National Championships. In 2006, she won the state floor champion. Sarah placed second all-around. She finished fourth on floor at Regionals.

As a freshman at Illinois in 2007, she competed in every meet on at least three events. She competed in the all-around the last four of five meets. She finished second on bars at the Big Ten Championships. She also finished sixth all-around. She won four event titles, two on bars and floor. She had twenty top three finishes. She won bars and floor at Illinois State. She won floor against Michigan State. She was the team's Most Improved Gymnast. Sarah competed in eleven of thirteen meets in 2008 as a sophomore. She missed two because of a sprained ankle. She finished third on bars at Regionals and at the Big Ten Championships. She won three bars titles and one all-around. She had twelve top-three finishes. She won the all-around at Iowa. She was an Illinois Scholastic All-State selection.

In 2009, she was a second-team All-American on floor at Illinois' first team appearance at NCAA Nationals. She was the Big 10 Floor Champion. She earned All-Big Ten selection on floor. She was named Big Ten Gymnast of the Week after winning two event titles against Penn State. She won nine individual titles with four on bars and five on floor. She had eighteen top-3 finishes. She was Academic All-Big Ten selection.
