Michelle Mai Selesky was born in San Juan Capistrano, California, on February 18, 1985. She is the daughter of Kenneth and Mai. She has an older sister, Eilea. She trained at National Gymnastics Training Center under coaches Debra Hutchinson, Zin Kinolik and Nikolai Dorochenko. She attended Aliso Niguel High School.

In 2000, Michelle competed as a level eight. She finished second on vault at States. She placed fourth on floor and sixth all-around at the Level 8 Regional Championships. She earned the Top Gun Award. Michelle moved up to level nine in 2001. She finished sixth on vault at States. She qualified to Regionals. In 2002, Michelle competed as a level ten. She earned the Most Inspirational Award for her club.

Michelle began attending UCLA in the fall of 2003. She joined the UCLA team as a walk-on. She competed twice on floor in her freshman year. She earned NACGC Scholastic All-American honors. In 2005, Michelle competed on vault and floor at two meets. She earned her second NACGC Scholastic All-American honors. In 2006, Michelle was named team co-captain. She was hampered by ankle injuries. She did earn NACGC Scholastic All-American for the third straight year. During her senior season, she competed on vault and floor in every meet. She earned All-Pac-10 honors on vault. She was a Second-team Pac-10 All-Academic honoree.
