Makenzey Shank was born on August 27, 1996. She began gymnastics at the age of three in 1999. She trained at Flames until the 2008 season. She currently trains at Desert Devils. Makenzey will graduate from high school in 2014.

In the fall of 2003, Makenzey competed level four. She qualified for the State Championships. In March of 2004, Makenzey won vault at the Shamrock Invitational. In 2005, she competed level five. She finished second on vault and in the all-around at the Phoenix Open. She won vault, bars, floor and the all-around at the Shamrock Invitational. At the Spring State Championships, she won vault and bars. She finished second all-around. In the fall, she made the National TOPs Team.

Makenzey began competing level seven in 2006. She won floor and placed second all-around at the San Diego Classic. At the Hard Rock Invitational, she finished third all-around. She won floor and the all-around at the Shamrock Invitational. At the State Championships, she won beam, floor and the all-around. She moved up to level nine in 2007. She finished third on vault and floor at the San Diego Classic. At the Hard Rock Invitational, she placed third all-around. She won vault, bars and the all-around at the Shamrock Invitational. At the State Championships, she won vault. She ended her season at Regionals, placing second on bars and in the all-around.

In 2008, Makenzey began competing level ten. She finished fifth all-around at the State Championships. She won a silver medal on beam. In 2009, she placed second on beam at the Lady Luck Invitational. She did not compete at States or Regionals. Makenzey placed first on floor and in the all-around at the Lady Luck Invitational. She finished third at the Fiesta Bowl Invitational. At the Malibu Coast Challenge, she won beam and the all-around. Makenzey placed first on beam and floor at the State Championships. At Regionals, she placed second on beam and twelfth all-around.
