Polina Shchennikova was born on January 7, 1998. She trained at USA Gymnastics World in 2005. She then moved to Stars Gymnastics Village until 2011 when she began training at Tigar. Polina's sister, Alyona, is also a gymnast. Polina will graduate from high school in 2016.

In 2005, Polina competed level five. She won floor at the Utah State Championships. She also placed third on bars. In 2007, Polina made the National TOPs Team. She competed level eight in 2008. She won vault, beam and the all-around at the Sand Dollar Invitational. She placed second on bars. At the State Championships, she won vault, bars, floor and the all-around. At Regionals, she placed fourth all-around. She won a silver medal on bars. Polina competed level nine in 2009. She won bars at the WOGA Classic. She placed second all-around. At the State Championships, she won bars and floor. She finished second all-around. Polina finished second on bars and ninth all-around at Regionals. She qualified to hopes elite but did not compete at the US Challenge. In late December, she was named to the National Team Training Squad. In July of 2010, Polina qualified for junior international elite. She competed at the US Classic.

Polina placed third all-around at the 2011 WOGA Classic in the elite session. She finished third all-around at the American Classic. She competed at the US Classic and Visa Championships. Polina won bars and the all-around at the 2012 Pikes Peak Cup. She finished second all-around at the Nastia Liukin Cup. She won bars at the American Classic. Polina placed second on bars and ninth all-around at the US Classic. At the Visa Championships, she placed fourth on bars and tenth all-around. In 2013, Polina finished first on bars and beam at the Pikes Peak Cup. She was added to the US National Team at the US National Team Training Camp. At the US Classic, Polina finished third on bars and eighth all-around. She placed third on bars and eighth all-around at the US National Championships.
