Samantha Sheehan was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on May 20, 1986. She is the daughter of Kevin and Cindy. She has a twin brother named Matt. Sam also has an older sister, Heather. She began gymnastics in 1989.

Sam first went elite in 2001. At the US Classic she finished 19th all-around. Her final meet of the season was the National Championships. She moved up to the senior division in 2002. At the US Classic, Sam finished fifth all-around and first on floor. Sam made her first national team by finishing in the top 12 at nationals. Later, she was made to the World Team. At Worlds, Sam finished third on floor. In 2003, Sam continued competing elite. She finished fourth on bars at the national podium meet and first all-around at the USA v. Belgium meet. At the US Classic, she was third on bars and sixth on floor. Sam made the world team but pulled out due to an injury.

In 2004, she finished fourth all-around and first on bars at the elite podium meet. She also won a silver on bars at the Athens Test Event. She only competed the first day at the US National Championships. She scratched from day two after several falls on beam in day one. Sam finished up her elite career at the Olympic Trials. She competed for the University of Georgia for one year.
