Kayla Sheets was born on October 1, 1991. She trained at Ocean Tumblers during her club career. She graduated from high school in 2010. She then began attending University of Virginia.

In 2004, Kayla competed level eight. She won vault at the State Championships in 2005. She finished in the top ten all-around at Regionals. Kayla moved up to level nine in 2006. She won bars and the all-around at the State Championships. Kayla won vault, bars, beam and the all-around at the State Championships in 2007. At Regionals, she placed first on bars and third all-around. Kayla finished eighth on vault and 24th all-around at Easterns.

Kayla began competing level ten in 2008. She finished eleventh all-around at the State Championships. In 2009, she finished in the top ten at the Brestyan Invitational and Mary Lou Retton Invitational. She won vault at the Shamrock Invitational. She finished in the top fifteen at the State Championships. Kayla returned to level nine in 2010. She won the all-around title at the Buckeye Classic. She placed second all-around at the Spring Break-Out meet. She won all five gold medals at the State Championships. At Regionals, she won bars and placed second all-around. She won bars at Easterns. She placed fourth all-around.
