Alyssa Shermetaro was born on June 19, 1996. She trained at Quincy Gymnastics in Illinois as a compulsory. She has trained at Olympia Gymnastics in Michigan since 2006.

In 2003, Alyssa competed level four. She won bars, beam and the all-around at the Illinois State Championships. In 2006, Alyssa competed level eight. She won floor at States. At Regionals, she finished seventh on uneven bars. She placed 12th all-around out of 48. She moved up to level nine in 2007. She won beam and placed second all-around at the Vegas Cup. At the Wolverine Classic, she won vault, bars and the all-around. Alyssa won balance beam and placed second all-around at the Motown Madness meet. She finished sixth all-around at the Sand Dollar Invitational. She won beam and placed second all-around at the GTC Invitational. Alyssa finished third on beam and second all-around at the Level 9 State Championships. She made the National TOPs Team in the fall.

In 2008, Alyssa moved up to level ten. She finished second all-around at the Twistars Invitational. Alyssa qualified to hopes. She competed at the US Challenge. She continued competing level ten in 2009. Alyssa finished second on bars and beam at States. She did not compete all-around. She finished tenth all-around at Regionals, qualifying for the JO National Invitational Tournament. She won the all-around and uneven bars! She placed third on vault. In June, she earned her international elite compulsory score at the Parkette Invitational. She received her optional score at the July National Qualifier. She competed at the US Classic.

Alyssa continued to have strong results in 2010. She swept the gold medals at the Winterfest in January as a level ten. She won bars, beam and the all-around at the Buckeye Classic. She also competed in the elite session at the Buckeye Classic, re-qualifying to junior international elite. At the Motown Madness meet, Alyssa won bars and the all-around in the level ten division. She qualified to the Visa Championships at the Bieger Elite Qualifier in June. She finished her first Visa Championships with a strong top twenty five finish. She returned to level ten in 2011. She finished first on bars at the Sand Dollar Invitational, Athlete Warrior Challenge and Motown Madness meet. Alyssa finished third on floor at the Arena Classic. At the State Championships, she placed second on beam and third all-around. Alyssa finished in the top twenty all-around at Regionals.
