Aja-Monet Sims was born on October 4, 1995. She began gymnastics in 1999. She trained at Orlando Metro Gymnastics for several years. She moved to Brandy Johnson's in 2010. Aja graduated from high school a semester early to join Alabama for the 2014 season.
In 2003, Aja competed level four. She won the all-around at the Temple Terrace Gymnastics Qualifier. At the Daytona Beach Open, she finished second all-around. She finished third all-around at the 3rd AAU Qualifier. Aja won the Florida AAU State Championships. At the Aloha Invite, she won bars, beam, floor and the all-around. She soon moved up to level five. She won the all-around at the 1st AAU Qualifier. She finished fourth all-around at the Gasparilla Classic. She won a bronze medal on floor at the Jungle Gym. At the USAG State meet, she won bars and placed third all-around. Aja competed one last level five meet in January of 2004, winning beam at the Sand Dollar Invitational.
In the fall of 2004, she moved up to level six. She finished second on vault, bars and beam at the Jungle Gym Invitational. In 2005, she finished third all-around at the Sand Dollar Invitational. Aja placed second all-around and first on beam at the Battle of Champions. At the Gasparilla Classic, she won vault and floor. She placed second all-around. In 2006, Aja moved up to level seven. She won beam and the all-around at the IGI Chicago Style. At the Pikes Peak Cup, she placed third all-around. She competed at States. Aja moved up to level eight in 2007. She won vault and placed third on beam at the IGI Chicago Style. She finished third on bars at Regionals.
Aja began competing level nine in 2008. She won the all-around at the Hard Rock Invitational. She placed second on beam. At the City of Lights Invitational, she finished fourth on vault and beam. She placed second all-around at the IGI Chicago Style. At States, Aja won beam. She finished third on bars, beam and the all-around at Regionals. She won a silver medal on vault. She concluded her season at Easterns. She finished fourth all-around!
She moved up to level ten in 2009. At the Atlanta Crown Invitational, she won her only event, uneven bars. She placed second on bars and third on beam at the Sand Dollar Invitational and City of Lights Invitational. At the Tampa Bay Turners Invitational, she won bars and placed second on beam. Aja finished third all-around at the Palm Beach Invitational. At States, she won bars, beam and the all-around. She finished second on bars at Regionals. Aja qualified to junior pre-elite. She competed at the US Challenge. In 2010, Aja won bars and beam at the Tampa Bay Turners Invitational. She tested elite at the July National Qualifier. She started her 2011 season at the Tampa Bay Turners Invitational. At the Presidential Classic, she placed third in the all-around and first on floor exercise. She won all-around title at the Northern Lights Classic and Daytona Beach Open. At the Level 10 State Championships, she won the all-around title! In addition, she won silver medals on vault and floor exercise. She placed second on uneven bars and seventh overall at the Level 10 Regionals. There, Aja qualified to the Junior Olympic Nationals in Long Beach, California where she placed impressive fourth on uneven bars and in the all-around out of 57 gymnasts! During the JO Nationals, Aja's new bars skill was approved as an E skill and it is named The Sims. A few weeks after JO Nationals, Aja qualified to senior international elite and competed at the US Covergirl Classic in Chicago.
Aja returned to level ten in 2012. She won vault, beam, floor and the all-around at the Tampa Bay Turners Invitational. She finished first on floor and second all-around at the Presidential Classic. At the Tim Rand Invitational, she won vault, bars, beam and the all-around. Aja won vault at the National Gymnastics Challenge. Aja won vault, bars, floor and the all-around at the Kurt Thomas Invitational. She finished first on vault and bars at the State Championships. She placed third all-around. She won all five gold medals at Regionals. Aja won bars, beam and the all-around at JO Nationals! She also placed second all-around. In 2013, Aja won beam, floor and the all-around at the Atlanta Crown Invitational. She won all five gold medals at the Ozone Invitational. At the IGI Chicago Style, Aja won vault, beam and the all-around. She finished second all-around and third on beam at the Nastia Liukin Cup! She won beam at the Tim Rand Invitational. At the State Championships, she won bars, beam, floor and the all-around. She won bars, beam, floor and the all-around at Regionals. At JO Nationals, she placed first on beam and floor! She finished seventh all-around.
As a freshman at Alabama in 2014, Aja competed on bars, beam and floor. She was on the All-SEC team and SEC All-Freshman Team. She earned SEC Freshman of the Week. She won beam at the NCAA Regional meet. Aja won one beam title and one floor title during the regular season.
