Kayla Slechta was born on January 11, 1992. She trained at Classic Gymnastics during her club career. She graduated from high school in 2010.
In 2004, Kayla competed level nine. She finished 12th all-around at Regionals. Kayla moved up to level ten in 2005. In 2006, she finished seventh all-around at Regionals. She competed at JO Nationals. Kayla placed third on beam at Regionals in 2007. She was the alternate for JO Nationals. In 2008, Kayla finished seventh all-around at Regionals. She finished 27th all-around at JO Nationals. Kayla won vault, beam, floor and the all-around at the 2009 Twin Cities Classic. She won vault at the California Classic. At the Harley Davidson meet, she won vault and the all-around. Kayla finished first on vault at the Rising Stars Invitational. She placed third all-around at both the State and regional Championships. She competed at JO Nationals. In 2010, Kayla finished second on bars at the Northern Lights Classic. She finished eighth all-around at Regionals.
As a freshman at Minnesota in 2011, Kayla competed on vault and bars in every meet. She also saw significant action n floor. Kayla won eight vault tiles and one floor title throughout the season. She earned a spot on the All-Big Ten Second Team. She won vault at Ohio State, Michigan State, Air Force, best of Minnesota Meet, Iowa State and at Cal State Fullerton.
