Ashley Sledge was born on August 31, 1991 to Ashley and Sandra. Sandra was a football player at Southern Illinois University. Ashley has one sister, Sandra, who competed level seven in 2010. During her club career, Ashley trained at World Class Gymnastics in Illinois.

In 2003, Ashley competed level nine. She won the all-around title at Regionals. At Easterns, she placed third on vault and ninth all-around. She competed level ten in 2005. She finished second all-around at the State Championships. She won floor. At Regionals, she placed fifth all-around and first on vault. Ashley ended her season at JO Nationals, winning bars, beam and the all-around. She also placed fourth on vault and sixth on floor. She was named Region 5 Athlete of the Year.

Ashley did not compete in 2006. She returned in 2007, winning five gold medals at the GymQuarters Invitational. At the State Championships, she won vault, beam, floor and the all-around. She placed third all-around at JO Nationals. She won a silver medal on vault. In 2008, Ashley swept the gold medals at the IGI Chicago Style. She also won the Circle of States Invitational. In December, she tore her Achilles. As a freshman at Alabama, Ashley won bars at her first meet against Auburn. For this, she was named SEC Freshman Gymnast of the Week. At the end of January, she tweaked her ankle. Ashley came through with a clutch bar routine in the Super Six.
