Allie Elizabeth Southard was born on March 20, 1988. She is the daughter of Eileen and Bill Southard. She has one younger sister, Emma. During her club career, she competed for US Gymnastics in Mahwah, New Jersey, with coaches John and Michele Ribeiro. She also competed for her high school, Nanuet High School. She won the New York state all-around title in her freshman year.

In 2001, she competed as a level nine. She qualified to the Eastern Championships. Allie won the State all-around, bars, and floor titles. At Regionals, she finished first on vault, beam and in the all-around. In 2002, Allie did level nine again. She finished first on beam and in the all-around at States. She qualified to her second Eastern Championships at Regionals. At Easterns, she finished sixth all-around. Allie moved up to level ten in 2003. She finished first on floor and in the all-around at States. Allie placed fourth all-around at Regionals. At the JO National Championships, she won floor. In 2004, Allie won beam at States. She only competed on floor at States in 2005. In 2006, she won states. She then placed second all-around at Regionals. Allie competed in her second JO National Championships in 2006.

As a freshman at Penn State, she competed in eleven meets. She competed on vault, beam and floor. She finished fourth on vault against Maryland. She missed most of her sophomore year because of a broken back. In late March, she exhibitioned on beam. She returned in 2009 to competed seven times on vault, ten times on beam and floor. She won her first collegiate event title at Illinois winning beam.
