Michelle Christine Stout was born on April 27, 1988. She is the middle child of Thomas Stout and Linda Van Patten. She has an older sister, Rachel. Her younger brother's name is Chad. She trained at Southern Tier Gymnastics in New York. She was a Gold Academic Award at her high school, Maine Endwell. She won the Silver Academic Award three times.

In 2000, she competed as a level ten at Regionals. She also competed as a level ten in 2001. In 2002, she competed as a junior national elite at the US Challenge. She also competed as a level ten at Regionals. In 2003, she won the Regional vault title as a level ten. She finished ninth all-around. In 2004, Michelle placed first on vault and second all-around at Regionals. At the JO Nationals, she won vault and finished tenth all-around! She also competed as a senior pre-elite. She competed at the US Challenge and American Challenge.

Michelle won the US Challenge as a senior pre-elite in 2005. She also won bars and vault. As a level ten, she finished second on vault and third on beam at the Regionals Championships. She won the all-around, vault and bars titles. At the JO National Championships, she finished second on vault and third on floor. In 2006, she finished third on vault at the State Championships. She then won bars at Regionals. She finished third all-around. At the JO National Championships, Michelle placed eighth all-around. She won a bronze on vault!

As a freshman at the University of Arkansas in 2007, Michelle had a great season until an injury limited her late in the year. She posted a school record on vault against Florida, winning the event. She competed on all four events throughout the season. She also posted top notch grades earning selection to the SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll and NACGC/W all-scholar team. Michelle continued to have success as a sophomore in 2008. She became the first NCAA All-American and event finalist at the NCAA Championships in Arkansas history. She earned first-team All-America honors on vault. She competed all-around throughout the season. She won the all-around title against Auburn. She earned SEC Gymnast of the Week Honors after her meet against Alabama. All of her floor and beam scores counted for the team. She was selected to the SEC Academic Honor Roll and also earned the Dana McQuillin Coaches Award.

During her junior season in 2009, Michelle was selected for the SEC Gymnastics Community Service Team. Only seven athletes are chosen. Michelle earned a spot on the SEC Academic Honor Roll for the third time. Michelle helped the Arkansas team to their first Super Six. She also made individual event finals on vault and bars. Michelle missed the 2010 season due to injury. She returned for a fifth year in 2011. She competed on vault and bars. She won bars at UIC and against West Virginia. She was named SEC SCholar-Athlete of the Year. She earned a spot on the SEC Academic Honor Roll.
