Caitlin Sullivan was born to Dan and Cindy on October 5, 1990. She has one sister, Brandi, and four brothers. She began gymnastics at the age of three at a YMCA. She was originally from Indiana. Caitlin competed for Geddert's Twistars USA until early 2003. She then switched to Cincinnati Gymnastics. In the spring of 2004, she decided to retire from gymnastics. Caitlin resumed competing for her high school in 2006. In 2008, she returned to club competitions with Cutting Edge Athletics under Shannon Hunt.
Caitlin was a very successful level ten athlete. At the JO National Championships in 2001, she finished third all-around. Caitlin was also second on vault. By placing in the top four all-around, she qualified for the JO National Team. In 2002, she won the competition! Caitlin was also first on beam. She was second on bars and floor. In 2003, she qualified to junior international elite. At the National Podium meet, she finished eighth all-around. Caitlin placed sixth all-around and third on beam at the American Classic. At the US Classic, she placed in the top ten. Her final meet of the season was the US National Championships. She finished fifth all-around and second on floor!
After a few years off, she competed for her high school in the 2006 competitions as a freshman. She won the all-around at several dual meets. At Sectionals, she swept the gold medals. At the Regional Championships, Caitlin placed second all-around and first on floor. She struggled through her high school season in 2007 because of a torn labrum in her right shoulder. Despite this, she finished second on beam at States. She won the sectional and regional championships. She returned to club competition in 2008. She improved with every meet. At the Hard Rock Invitational, she finished fourth all-around. She placed third on floor. At Regionals, she finished sixth all-around. At JO Nationals, Caitlin finished in the top ten all-around.
She graduated from Elkhart High School early and joined Alabama's team in time for the 2009 competitive season. As a freshman, she was a main competitor on balance beam and floor exercise. Her highest score was a 9.900 on beam and a 9.875 on floor. She was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team.
