Sydney Townsend was born on April 17, 1995. She began gymnastics at USA Gymnastics World. She trained there until her coaches left in the summer of 2009. Sydney then moved to Olympus Gymnastics where she is coached by Mary Wright and Ryan Kirkham. She will graduate from high school in 2013.
Sydney began gymnastics at the age of four, entering a developmental program at the age of six. She competed level seven in her second year of competition. She won the all-around title at the State Championships in 2005. She moved up to level eight in 2006. She finished second all-around at the LA Lights Invitational. She finished third all-around at the State Championships. In 2007, Sydney began competing level nine. She finished fourth all-around at the State Championships. She qualified to Regionals. In 2008, Sydney finished third all-around at the State Championships. Sydney again competed at Regionals.
Sydney had a strong level nine season in 2009. She finished fourth all-around at the Surf City Classic. She placed second all-around at the Bear Country Invitational. She placed first on floor at the State Championships. Sydney finished second all-around at Regionals. At Westerns, she placed third on beam and sixth all-around. Sydney moved up to level ten in 2010. She missed most of the season due to an arm injury. She returned in 2011. Sydney finished in the top twenty all-around at Regionals.
