Allison Lian Szutu was born in Oakland, California on July 8, 1986. She is the daughter of Peter Szutu and Jan Eldred. She has one brother, Michael. During her club career, she trained at Airborne.
In 2002, Alli competed as a level ten. She finished third on bars at JO Nationals. In 2003, she finished third all-around at States. Alli won bars and floor. At Regionals, she qualified to her second JO National Championships. She finished fourth on vault at JO Nationals. In 2004, Alli won the state uneven bars title. She finished second in the all-around, vault and floor. At Regionals, she placed fourth all-around with a fall on beam. She ended her club career with a top twenty finish at JO Nationals.
At UC Berkeley, Alli competed on all four events throughout the season. She competed all-around in her first college meet. In 2006, she was a honorable mention Pac-10 All-Academic honoree. She competed on mainly vault and floor during her sophomore season. In 2007, she competed on vault at the NCAA West Regional as an individual qualified. She saw action on vault, bars and floor during her junior year. As a senior, she competed on vault, bars and floor at the first meet. She only competed one more bar routine against Arizona.
