Tesla Cox was born on September 30, 1991. She trained at Greenville Gymnastics through the 2000 season. She then moved to Southern Stars before returning to Greenville after the 2002 season. She trained at Electric City from 2004 to 2007. She competed for Greenville in 2009. In 2010, she trained at Elite Gymnastics in South Carolina. She graduated from high school in 2010.

In 2000, Tesla competed level four. She won bars, beam and the all-around at the Charleston Cup. She competed level eight in 2002. She finished fourth on bars at the Charleston Cup. She moved up to level nine in 2003. She finished fourth all-around at the Atlanta Crown Invitational. In 2004, Tesla finished first on bars at the Carolina Classic. She competed at Regionals. She began competing level ten in 2005. She made a clean sweep at the State Championships, winning first on every event and in the all-around. In 2006, she finished in the top fifteen at Regionals.

Tesla continued competing level ten in 2007. She won bars at the Atlanta Crown Invitational. She won beam, floor and the all-around at the State Championships. In 2009, Tesla swept the gold medals at the Myrtle Beach Invitational. She won bars, floor and the all-around at the Tiger Paw Invitational. Tesla won vault, barss and the all-around at the State Championships. She placed in the top fifteen at Regionals. In 2010, she won beam, floor and the all-around at the Carolina Classic. Tesla won vault at the Tiger Paw Invitational and bars at the Charleston Cup. She won bars and the all-around at the State Championships. At Regionals, she placed in the top twenty.
