Jasmine Thompson was born to William and Beatrice Thompson on June 17, 1987. She trained at Olympic Dreams under Gary and Dawn Toussaint during her club career.

In 2003, she won floor at the Ohio Level 10 State Championships. In 2004, she won the Buckeye Classic. At States, she finished second all-around. Jasmine was also second on beam and third on bars. At Regionals, she placed in the top seven. Jasmine competed at the JO National Championships. Her performance gave her a spot on the Region 5 All-Star Team that went to China. In 2005, she won bars at States.

In the fall of 2005, she went to Iowa State. Jasmine redshirted her initial collegiate season. As a sophomore, she competed on all four events throughout the season. She tied for second on vault against Iowa and Denver. She finished second all-around against Oklahoma. Jasmine was on the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll in the fall of 2006. She had a strong season in 2008. She earned all-Big 12 academic first-team selection. She competed in the all-around at every meet. She finished eighth all-around at the Regional meet. She placed third at the Big-12 Championships. She also finished third on bars. She finished second in the all-around at Georgia. She won bars against Stanford. Jasmine won the all-around and floor at Minnesota.

She continued to have good results in 2009. She was the Big 12 co-champion on beam. She placed fourth all-around at the Big 12 Championships. She was a first-team Academic All-Big 12 honoree. She was named All-Big 12 on floor and on beam. She competed in the all-around at every meet for the second year. She was the ISU Janet Anson 'Key' Gymnast of the Year. She won the bars title at Nebraska. She won floor against Minnesota.
