Makayla Thrush was born on October 30, 1996. She began gymnastics at Red Cedar Gymnastics but quickly moved to Gedderts' Twistars. She will graduate from high school in 2015.

In 2005, Makayla competed level five. She competed at the Early State Championships. In 2007, Makayla won vault and the all-around at the Level 5 State Championships. She moved up to level six in the fall, finishing fifth all-around at the Early State Championships. In the spring of 2008, she finished third all-around at the For Love or Money meet. Makayla also finished third all-around at the Motown Madness. She won vault and the all-around at the State Championships.

Makayla began the 2009 season as a level seven, finishing second all-around at both the Twistars Invitational and Battle of the Championships. At the IGI Chicago Style, she won vault, floor and the all-around. Makayla then moved up to level eight. She finished first on floor at the Arena Classic. At the State Championships, she finished third on bars. Makayla competed at Regionals. In 2010, Makayla finished first on vault at both the Twistars Invitational and San Diego Classic. She finished third all-around at the For Love or Money meet. Makayla won vault and floor at the Wolverine Classic. She finished first on vault and second all-around at the State Championships. At Regionals, Makayla won bars and the all-around titles.
