Tatjana Thuener-Rego was born on May 16, 1987 in Canada. She is the daughter of Luiz Rego and Janice Thuener-Rego. She trained at Universal Gymnastics in Florida before college.

Tatjana was the AAU National Champion on vault, bars, beam and floor as a level five in 1997. She was also the Florida State Champion. Tatjana moved up to level six in 1998. She won her second Florida State title. In 1999, she was a member of the TOPS National Team. She also was the level seven Florida State Champion. In 2000, she competed level eight. At the Florida State Championships, she won the all-around title At Regionals, she won all-around, bars and beam titles. In 2001, she competed level nine. Tatjana won the regional bars title. She qualified to Easterns. At Easterns, she finished third on bars and vault. Tatjana won a level ten state title in 2002.

In 2003, she won bars at Regionals and qualified to the JO National Championships. At the JO Nationals, Tatjana finished eighth on vault. In 2004, Tatjana competed level ten and senior pre-elite. At the Regional Championships, she finished first on bars, beam and floor. Tatjana ended her level ten season by placing second at the JO National Championships. She won the floor title. Tatjana qualified to JO Nationals for the third time in 2005. In the fall, she began school at the University of Michigan. As a freshman, she was an All-American first team member on beam. She was also the Big Ten Freshman of the Year and a member of the All-Big Ten first team.

As a sophomore in 2007, she competed all-around at the NCAA Championships. She was All-Big Ten First Team. She won the all-around and floor at Regionals. She finished second on bars and floor at the Big 10 Championships. She was named Big Ten Gymnast of the Week three times during the season. She was named U-M Most Valuable Performer. During her junior season she mainly competed on vault and bars. She produced strong results. As a senior, she was on the All-Big Ten First Team. She returned to all-around competition. She won floor at the Cancun Classic. At the MSU Quad meet she won uneven bars.
