Ashley Nicole Toner was born on September 30, 1987. She is the daughter of Bill and Bonnie Toner. She has six siblings: Ryan, Sean, Alyssa, Amanda, Logan and Jaren. Ashley graduated from Mountain View High School in 2006. During her club career, she trained at Desert Lights Gymnastics.

In 2001, she competed as a junior national elite. At the American Challenge, she placed high enough to qualify for the National Gymnastics Festival. Ashley competed as a level ten in 2003. She finished third all-around at the State Championships. At Regionals, she finished eighth all-around. Ashley ended her season at the JO National Championships. In 2004, she finished third all-around at States again. She placed fifth all-around at Regionals. At JO Nationals, she only competed on vault. Ashley began competing for Arizona State in 2006. She competed on floor in every meet. She also competed in a beam exhibition. In 2007, she competed on bars, beam and floor throughout the season. She retired after her sophomore year.
