Alexis Tsurumoto was born to Chris and Thea on January 21, 1985. She graduated from Clayton Valley High School in Concord, California. She trained with Golden Gate Gymnastics until 2003. She then competed for Golden Bear. Alexis began attending Sacramento State University in the fall of 2003.

She competed as a level ten for several years. In 2001, she qualified for Regionals. Alexis finished second on bars at states in 2002. In 2003, she finished third on bars and beam at the State Championships. Alexis redshirted the 2004 season because of a knee injury. In 2005, she had her freshman season. Alexis qualified for the NCAA West Regional Championships on bars. She won the MPSF bars title with a 9.9. She won bars seven times.

During her sophomore year, Alexis continued to compete on uneven bars. She was in the lineup all thirteen meets. She won in four meets. During her junior season, she led the team on bars at the NCAA West Regional. She was second team all-WAC on bars. She missed the first nine meets of the year because of a broken finger. She exhibitioned on beam three times and competed on floor four times. She continued to be in the bar lineup her senior year.
