Rachel Elizabeth Updike was born on December 7, 1992. She is the daughter of Paula and Shawn. She has one sibling, a brother named Bryan. Rachel started at Eagles Gymnastics at the age of five. A year later she began training at Diamond Gymnastics. After Diamond's coaches left, Rachel switched to GAGE.

In 2003, Rachel competed as a level eight. She won the all-around title at the California Classic. At Regionals, she finished third all-around and first on vault. She moved up to level nine in 2004. At the Regional Championships, she won beam. At Westerns, Rachel won beam and finished in the top ten all-around! Rachel also competed as a TOPS Pre-Elite at the 2004 American Challenge and US Challenge. She moved up to level ten in 2005. She won beam at States. At Regionals, Rachel placed first on floor! She qualified to the JO National Championships but was not able to compete due to an injury.

A fully recovered Rachel began the season in New York. She won two medals at the American Classic. She finished second all-around at her home meet, the Dragon Invite. Rachel competed at the Starz and Stripes Invite in Reno, Nevada. In June, she qualified to junior international elite and the US National Championships. Rachel made her first national team at nationals! In early 2007, Rachel decided to take a short break from gymnastics. She decided to move to Kansas Gymnastics, Dance, and Cheer and compete level ten.

Rachel began her 2008 season by placing third on vault and second on floor at the Folger's New Years Invitational. At the Metroplex Challenge, Rachel won vault, floor and the all-around titles. She improved her all-around score by three points. At the IGI Chicago Style, Rachel again won the all-around title. She also won beam and floor. At the Kansas State Championships, Rachel won vault, beam and the all-around titles. She went on to finish third all-around at Regionals, qualifying for the JO National Championships. She scored her second high of 38.050. At JO Nationals, Rachel finished second on beam.

In 2009, she won floor at the Folger's Invite. She placed second on vault and third all-around. At the Pike's Peak Cup, she finished third on vault and fourth on floor. Rachel won beam and floor at the Dynamo Classic. She finished third all-around. At the Nadia Invite, she won vault, beam, floor and the all-around. Rachel won vault and floor at the Pink Ribbon Invitational. She finished second all-around. At the Kansas State Championships, she won floor. She placed second on vault, beam and the all-around. Rachel won vault at Regionals. She qualified for the JO NIT but chose not to attend. In the fall, she committed to the University of Missouri. In 2010, Rachel won vault, floor and the all-around at the IGI Chicago Style. She placed first on beam and seventh all-around at Regionals. At JO Nationals, Rachel won beam and floor! She placed seventh on vault and the all-around.
