Hannah Welker was born on July 24, 1990. She trained at Butler Gymnastics Club in Pennsylvania under Steve Heasley. Hannah graduated from high school in 2008.

In 2004, Hannah competed level ten. She finished 22nd all-around at Regionals. She placed 15th all-around at Regionals in 2006. In 2006, Hannah finished first on beam at the Stars & Stripes Invitational. She placed second on floor and fourth all-around at the State Championships. At Regionals, she finished 14th all-around. She finished first on vault, bars, beam and the all-around at the 2007 Stars & Stripes Invitational. She placed second on bars at the Buckeye Classic.

As a freshman at Illinois in 2009, Hannah exhibitioned on bars five times and beam twice. During her sophomore season in 2010, Hannah competed on bars twice. She had nine bar exhibitions. Hannah also exhibitioned on floor twice. She was an Academic All-Big Ten selection.
