Tenaya West was born on March 11, 1988. She is the daughter of Ed and Kathy West. During her club career, she trained at Woodland Gymnastics. She followed her coach to Davis Gymnastics. When her coach opened up her own gym, International Gymnastics Centre, Tenaya began training there.
In 2002, she competed as a level nine. Tenaya placed third on floor at Westerns, the highest level nine competition. In 2003, she moved up to level ten. Tenaya placed fourth on bars at States. At Regionals, she placed fifth. This was high enough to qualify for the JO National Championships. Tenaya placed in the top thirty in Colorado. She continued competing as a level ten in 2004. She finished third all-around at States. She won vault and placed second on floor. Tenaya placed fifth all-around at Regionals again. At JO Nationals, she placed 18th all-around.
Tenaya did her third season as a level ten in 2005. She finished first all-around at States! She also won beam and floor. At Regionals, Tenaya placed fourth all-around. She won a silver for her floor routine. At JO Nationals, Tenaya only did floor. Her senior year was in 2006. She won three state titles; all-around, beam and floor. At Regionals, she finished sixth all-around. At the JO National Championships, Tenaya finished in the top ten on floor. She also placed sixteenth all-around.
She did not competed as a freshman at Stanford. In 2008, she earned Stanford's Most Improved Gymnast award. She competed on floor throughout the season. She earned a spot on the Pac-10 All-Academic Team. During her junior season, she competed on floor four times including at the NCAA Championships.
