Katie Yamamura was born on September 15, 1990. She trained at Airborne Gymnastics during her club career. She graduated from high school in 2009.
In 2002, Katie competed level seven. She finished third all-around at the State Championships. She competed level eight in 2004. She won vault at the San Diego Classic. She placed second all-around at the Desert Devils Classic. She finished first on beam and second all-around at Regionals. Katie competed level nine in 2005. She finished third on bars and beam at the State Championships. She competed at Regionals. In 2006, she won floor and the all-around at the Flips USA Invitational. She placed in the top ten at the State Championships. At Regionals, she won vault. She placed sixth on vault and ninth on bars at Westerns. She finished 20th all-around.
Katie competed level ten in 2007. She finished first all-around at the San Diego Classic. She placed third all-around at the Spirit of the Flame Challenge. At the State Championships, she placed third on bars. She competed at Regionals. In 2008, Katie won bars at the Spirit of the Flame Challenge. She competed at Regionals. She placed second on bars at the 2009 State Championships. At Regionals, she finished sixth all-around. She finished 18th all-around at JO Nationals.
As a freshman at Davis in 2010, Katie earned All-MPSF honors on vault, beam, floor and the all-around. She qualified to NCAA Regionals as an individual all-arounder. She earned MPSF Gymnast of the Week four times. Katie became the first gymnast in program history to score a 39-plus more than once. She was an NACGC/W Scholastic All-American. In 2011, Katie had only one all-around performance. She did not compete in February due to injury. She earned All-MPSF Academic honors and NACGC/W Scholastic All-American honors.
