Sherry Yang was born on March 31, 1989. She trained at Capital Gymnastics during her club career. She graduated from Winston Churchill High School.

In 2001, Sherry competed as a level nine. She placed sixth on floor at Regionals. By 2003 she was competing as a level ten. She finished third all-around at States. Sherry also won silver medals on bars and floor. At Regionals, she finished tenth all-around. Sherry did not compete in 2004. In 2005, she finished fifth all-around at States. She won a silver on floor. She competed at Regionals. Sherry made it to JO Nationals in 2007. She finished 15th all-around.

Sherry only competed on uneven bars her freshman year. She participated in all but one meet. She earned the ECAC Coaches' Choice Award for her bar work. As a sophomore, she competed on vault, beam, and floor.
