Ming Ya Zhou was born on January 30, 1991. She was born in China. She trained at the Chinese National Training Center from ages 6-8. She then moved to Brestyan's Gymnatics, where she stayed her whole club career. She was on the National TOPs Team in 2000, 2001 and 2002. In 2003, she competed at the US Challenge as a TOPs National Elite. She finished third overall. In 2004, she competed at the US Challenge as a junior pre-elite.
In 2001, she competed as a level eight. She finished third all-around at the State Championships. She then won a silver in the all-around at Regionals. She competed as a level nine in 2002. She won the State Championships. Ming Ya Zhou moved up to level ten in 2004. She finished fifth all-around at States. She then won Regionals! In 2005, Ming Ya won States and Regionals. She finished tenth all-around and first on vault at the JO National Championships. She then qualified to junior international elite. She competed at the US Classic. She dropped down to level ten in 2006. She won States. At Regionals, she had a rough floor routine. Ming Ya Zhou won the all-around title at JO Nationals!
In 2007, she won beam at the Bresyan's Invitational. She won beam and floor at States. She finished second all-around. She placed fourth all-around at Regionals. She won beam. She won the vault, floor and all-around titles at the 2008 State Championships. At Regionals, she finished second all-around. She won vault and floor. She finished fourth on floor at JO Nationals. In 2009, she won a silver medal on floor at the Brestyan's Invitational. She placed second on bars at the Parkettes Invitational. She did not compete at Regionals. As a freshman at Stanford in 2010, she did not compete due to injury.
