Julia Zimmerman was born on May 9, 1987. She is the daughter of Keith and Elisabeth Zimmerman. She has three brothers Nicolas (4/28/1978), Gregory (3/23/1984) and Kristopher (12/18/1980). Kristopher is also a gymnast. He trained at Buffalo Grove Gymnastics and then went to the University of Michigan. He was on the US National Team for seven years. During her club career, Julia trained at Buffalo Grove Gymnastics. She then trained at American Academy.

In 1999, Julia competed as a level eight. She competed at the State Championships. She moved up to level nine in 2000. She placed second on vault and floor at the Level 9 State Championships. In 2002, she competed as a level ten. She finished eleventh all-around at the JO National Championships. Julia qualified to the JO National Championships again in 2003. She continued competing level ten in 2004. She qualified to Regionals. At her final state meet, she only competed on beam.

In the fall of 2005, Julia began attending Massachusetts Institute of Technology. During her freshman season, she was ECAC Rookie of the Year and the MIT Varsity Club Award. She was honored as the ECAC Division III Gymnastics of the Year in 2007. She was the first MIT gymnast to even win the award. She broke the school record in the all-around three times during her sophomore season. Julia also was the only Division III gymnast in the country to qualify for the NCAA Division I Regional Championships. She was the first ever from MIT and just the fifth Division III gymnast in the past twenty four years to compete. She was the NCGA National all-around title. She was the second MIT gymnast to claim the award. She also won beam. Julia then won a bronze on floor and first team all-american honors to cap out the championships.

As a senior in 2009, she received her third straight ESPN All-American at-Large first-team selection. Julia was the NACGC Division III East Regional Gymnast of the Year. She earned three first-team All-American honors. She won the all-around at the NCGA Championships for the second time. She earned multiple ECAC Division III Gymnast of the Week honors. She set a new all-around record in the all-around at the ECAC Division III meet.
