Zoya Yaseka Johnson was born on April 8, 1990 in Mandevil, Jamaica. She is the daughter of Annette and Chike Gardner. Zoya has three sisters, Shalini, Akayla and Khalia. Zoya trained at Hill's her whole club career.

In 2001, she competed as a level six. She finished second on floor at the State Championships. Zoya moved up to level seven in 2002. She finished third all-around at States. She advanced to level eight in 2003. Zoya won the all-around, vault, and bars state titles. She moved up to level nine in 2004. Zoya placed third all-around at States and Regionals. She reached the highest level of the junior olympic program in 2005. At the Regional Championships, she finished fourth all-around. Zoya placed in the top ten on uneven bars. After the level ten season, she competed as a junior pre-elite at the US Challenge. Zoya returned to level ten in 2006. She finished second all-around at States and Regionals. Zoya finished third on uneven bars at JO Nationals! She made the JO National Team.

In 2007, Zoya finished fourth on vault and sixth on floor at JO Nationals. She made the Region Seven All-Star Team. She placed third on vault at the 2008 Hard Rock Invitational. Zoya was on the Maryland State Team in 2008 after winning vault, bars, beam and the all-around at States. She finished second on bars and seventh all-around at Regionals. As a freshman at North Carolina, Zoya earned the Coaches Award on Uneven Bars. She also earned the Sunshine Award. She competed on vault, bars and beam. She earned First-Team All-EAGL on uneven bars.
